Severe weather and rising sea levels affect everyone but particularly the poor who have less resilience and resources to cope with it. Building sea defences helps but is 'kicking the can down the road.' The root causes need to be addressed rapidly.

Much has been said about the vital importance of not treating the oceans as a dumping ground. Less is said about the opportunities to collaborate in using the bounty of the oceans and sea bed. And the important of clear global regulatory structures and enforcement.

SANITATION

Sanitation

Poor sanitation and waste management pollutes land and watercourses, thereby promoting disease and damaging plant and aquatic life. Sanitary disposal of both solid and liquid waste is vital to protect the environment and to maintain a healthy population.

ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER

Access to clean water

There’s unequivocal evidence that access to fresh, clean water is a key to healthier populations and healthier economies. In 2019 over 800M people were without reliable access, and 840,000 annual deaths result from poor water hygiene.

We must protect the environment, expand Earth's natural resource base and maintain and improve soil fertility. Sustainable agriculture seeks to increase profitable farm income and promote environmental stewardship.

Waste has a huge negative impact on the natural environment. Harmful chemicals and greenhouse gasses are released from landfill sites. Recycling helps reduce the pollution caused by waste and reduces the need for raw materials.

Floods have large social consequences for communities and individuals: loss of life, property damage, destruction of crops, loss of livestock, and deterioration of health conditions owing to waterborne diseases

A flourishing life on land is the foundation for our life on this planet. Our duty is to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

Plastic often takes hundreds of years to decompose. Toxic pollutants affect the environment, the oceans, small organisms and wildlife. The build-up must be led by a shift to metal, wood, glass and less plastic packaging, bags and bottles.

ETHICAL FASHION

Ethical fashion

Garment manufacturing and distribution raises environmental and social issues. Worker exploitation, unhealthy working conditions, use of chemicals, animal cruelty and environmental damage are consequences that need to be addressed.

It is time to adopt the Circular Economy as our compass. Cheap and disposable must be replaced by built to last, recycling, re-purposing and bio-degradability so that - more and more - there is little waste. And we become intelligent re-users, not consumers.

Forests, which cover over 30% of the earth’s land, are being cut down at the rate of 1.5 acres every second, for conversion to farms or urban life. Reforestation is needed to help reverse this trend and thereby rebuild habitats and slow climate change by absorbing CO2 emissions.

A form of environmental conservation and ecological restoration that can significantly increase biodiversity, self-sustainable environments and mitigate climate change. Rewilding aims to reintroduce lost animal and plant species to natural environments.

Effective fire combat and support to the communities affected is essential, but policy makers also need to address the root causes of forest fires, limiting the tragic impact on the flora and fauna that live there.

Plastic waste is now in even the remotest parts of our oceans and damaging sea life. Minute particles may enter the food chain. Reduction and elimination of plastic waste in water courses and coastal areas is now a priority.

Getting Electricity

Providing people with choice to access better, brighter, cleaner, solar powered, alternatives immediately remove these aspects of poverty. Put simply, a solar powered light or system improves life within rural off grid households.

Feeding the base

Our inability to feed all the world's population is mostly due to food waste. Globally, 30–40% of all food is wasted. In less developed countries, this waste is caused by lacking infrastructure and knowledge to keep food fresh.

Fish stock depletion is severe and has implications for food security and economic development, reduces social welfare around the world, and undermines wellbeing of marine ecosystems. 7/10 main fish species are fully or over-exploited. (FAO)

Modern intensive farming depletes soil carbon and organic nitrogen. It's hostile to soil-enriching microbes like fungi and earthworms. Soil quality needs less agricultural chemicals, encouraging biodiversity and reducing tillage.
